Gary Embury
is Senior Lecturer on the BA(Hons) Illustration course at the University of the West of England in Bristol and
Editor-in-Chief of Reportager.org an online journal dedicated to showcasing and
initiating reportage drawing. As the founder of
Reportager, Gary conceived and
curated the International Reportager Drawing Award and co-authored the book ‘Reportage
Illustration, Visual Journalism’ with Mario Minichiello, published by Bloomsbury.
Embury has created
illustrations for notable clients such as The Saturday Times, The Telegraph,
The Guardian, New Scientist,
Radio Times, Aardman Animation, Penguin Books,
British Telecom, and Barclays Bank, among many others in the editorial,
publishing,
and advertising sectors. In 2006, he won the Gold Award at the AOI Illustration
Awards and was invited to discuss
the future of illustration in the digital age
on Radio 4's Front Row with Kirsty Lang. He has delivered talks and presented papers
at prestigious
institutions and conferences worldwide, including the Victoria & Albert
Museum, the Royal College of Art,
and the Quentin Blake Centre for
Illustration.
In 2022, Gary exhibited a
series of drawings at the Saatchi Gallery as part of the group exhibition ‘The Healing Arts.’ He is
currently working on several drawing-related projects and publications and
serves as an artist in residence at Chelsea and
Westminster Hospital. As one of
the founding members of the UWE BCU Drawing Research Group, Gary co-organizes
exhibitions and activities that explore and scrutinize drawing practice,
including the recent symposium and exhibition
‘What is Drawing Research?’ at Birmingham
School of Art in November 2023.
Embury is also co-authoring
a Handbook of Drawing
Research for Bloomsbury Publishing with founding members of the
UWE
BCU Drawing Research Group, Lucy Ward, Chloe Masi and Anouk Mercier.
